Manitoulin Island plate reader flags suspended driver, impaired charges laid
A Manitoulin Island man is charged for impaired driving with an opened bottle of liquor after an automated licence plate reader alerted police to his suspension.
Officers pulled the Birch Island man over on Meredith Street East in Little Current around 3 a.m. Thursday, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release.
"Further investigation resulted in the driver being arrested," OPP said.
The 20-year-old is charged with driving while under suspension, operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 80 plus and driving with an unsealed container of liquor.
He is scheduled to appear in court in Gore Bay on Feb. 11.
"The OPP wants to remind the public that if you suspect an impaired driver on our roads, waterways or trails, don't hesitate to 'make the call' and dial 911," police said.
"Your phone call could save someone's life."
Decrease in impaired driving
Earlier this week, OPP released the stats from its Holiday sobriety checks for the northeast region.
Between Nov. 21 and Jan. 1, 165 roadside sobriety checks were conducted on Manitoulin.

Those checks resulted in 26 impaired driving charges being laid and one suspension being issued for registering in the 'warn range' of 0.05-0.079 blood alcohol concentration level.
This is down from the previous season where 29 impaired driving charges were laid and two 'warn range' suspensions issued.
