SUDBURY -- A 47-year-old man from South Porcupine, Ont., is facing charges after he approached four hunters in a boat on Nighthawk Lake in Timmins and fired a shot at them.
The man, who was alone in his boat, then fled the scene and was arrested days later by the Timmins Police Service.
The incident took place Sept. 10 in the early evening in the Goose Creek area of the lake.
"A vessel approached a party of four men who were duck hunting in the area," police said in a news release Monday. "A verbal altercation escalated to a point where a firearm was discharged,"
After the man fired a shot toward them, the duck hunters fled the area for their own safety, police said. The suspect also left the area.
He was eventually identified, located and arrested Sept. 13 in the afternoon. Police obtained a search warrant for his home and found firearm and ammunition, both improperly stored.
"These items were taken into possession by the Timmins Police Service to serve as exhibits at the trial of the accused," police said.
The 47-year-old is now charged with committing an offence using a firearm, careless use of a firearm contrary, handling a firearm in a careless manner, pointing a firearm, discharging a firearm with the intent to do harm, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, three counts of uttering threats and two counts of careless storage of a firearm or ammunition,
The accused remained in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated at Provincial Court in Timmins on Monday.
