Man charged with first degree murder following a fatal shooting on Manitoulin Island

Ontario Provincial Police say one person has been killed in a shooting on Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island early Sunday morning.

It happened on Hills Trail before 2 a.m., the OPP said in a news release.

"Members of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police, the Manitoulin Detachment of the OPP and the Sagamok Detachment of the Anishinabek Police Service responded to a shooting,” police said.

25-year-old Brandon Trudeau Pheasant of the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, has died as a result of his injuries.

A shelter in place of safety was temporarily initiated in the area.

"There will be a police presence from Hill’s Trail to Wikwemikong Way, then to Sesame Street. Officers will be in green and with the canine unit," officials with the territory said, in a Facebook post just before 1:30 p.m.

“Please do not congregate in these areas."

Tyran Armstrong, an 18-years-old resident of the M'Chigeeng First Nation has been arrested and charged with first degree murder following the incident.

Police said the shooting is believed to be an isolated incident and there are no concerns for public safety.

The accused has been remanded into custody to appear in court in Gore Bay on Feb. 21.

"In light of this morning's tragic event, there will be a sacred fire at the Wiikwemkoong Health Centre Medicine Lodge," representatives of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory said in a news release.

Members of the Mnidoo Mnising Crisis Team will be available on site at the medicine lodge to provide support for anyone in need.

"We understand that many of us may be feeling sadness, shock, grief and other emotions in response to this morning's event, please reach out for support," the release went on to say.

"You are not alone."

Personnel from multiple OPP units and Wikwemikong Tribal Police are working together on the investigation, which is continuing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

"Police will have more information to share with the public on Tuesday," OPP Constable John Hill said, speaking with CTV News Sunday evening.
