Man, 45, killed in single-vehicle crash on Skead Road in Sudbury
A 45-year-old man was killed Friday night when the pickup truck he was driving on Skead Road hit the guardrails and plummeted down the embankment.
Police were called to the single-vehicle collision near the airport just before 9 p.m. Aug. 16.
"Based on the investigation, it was determined that the pickup truck was being driven northbound on Skead Road when it collided with the guardrails and travelled into an embankment, ejecting the driver from the vehicle," Greater Sudbury Police Service said in a news release Monday.
"City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic and Fire Services responded to the scene and began life-saving measures on the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. The driver was transported to hospital with critical injuries."
The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police said the victim was not wearing a seatbelt and that "impairment is suspected. Speed was a factor in the collision, as well."
"Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends," police said.
"His identity will not be provided out of respect for the family’s wishes."
An investigation into the crash is continuing and anyone with information about it is being asked to contact the traffic management unit at 705-675-9171.
The road was closed at Nickel Rim South Mine Road overnight, reopening just before 4 a.m. Saturday.
