Loud noise rattles Sault residents after incident at steel plant
A ‘boom’ was heard across Jamestown in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. on Sunday morning as a result of slag from the local steel plan came into contact with moisture.
In an email to CTV News on Monday, Algoma Steel’s director of strategy, corporate affairs and sustainability Laura Devoni confirmed there were no injuries following the incident at their basic oxygen steel production facility.
“No one was hurt in an incident before noon yesterday that occurred in our steelmaking facility,” she said.
“Slag came into contact with moisture causing a release of steam with slag.”
Several area residents reported the rumbling on local social media pages with many uploading photos of heavy smoke coming from the area of the steel plant and mentioning their homes shook and an unusual odour following the incident.

Officials confirm there was no risk to public health from the steam.
Earlier this year, another reaction between molten metal and moisture burned 12 workers at the steel plant, sending five of them to hospital.
