A 17-year-old driver is accused of travelling more than 50km/h over the speed limit on Highway 11 early Sunday morning, provincial police say.

On Dec. 31 at about 12:30 a.m., an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer stopped a vehicle they said was travelling 150km/h in a 90km/h zone on Highway 11 in Moonbeam Township.

The teenage driver from Kapuskasing, Ont. was charged with stunt driving. Additionally, the teen received a 30-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days per provincial regulations.

Drivers in Ontario face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 and fines can increase to a maximum of $10,000, upon conviction.

OPP officials in northern Ontario have said reports of stunt driving in the region is rising after a pandemic pause.

According to police, when asked about the incident the driver said they were “just heading home.”

“Slow down, drive safe and let’s make sure everyone arrives home safely,” said police.

Correction

An earlier version of this story indicated the accused was travelling more than 100km/h more than the speed limit in error. Police say the driver was travelling 150km/h in a 90km/h zone.
