An investigation is underway after an infant with no vital signs was brought to a northern Ontario hospital, Ontario Provincial Police say.

Officers were called to the hospital in Wawa shortly before 7 p.m. Dec. 2, where the baby had been brought in by family members, OPP said in a news release Thursday night.

An autopsy was performed on Dec. 5 in Toronto, but police have not released the cause of death.

"The results of the autopsy are unknown," OPP Const. Bev Gauthier told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email Friday.

"Because the investigation is in its early stages, no further details can be released at this time. Further information will be provided when it becomes available," OPP said.

The OPP criminal investigation branch is overseeing the case which involves the Superior East crime unit, forensic identification services, the office of the chief coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

"If anyone has information regarding the investigation, please call the Superior East OPP detachment at 1-888-310-1122," police said.

"Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.saultcrimestoppers.com."
