SUDBURY -- A 42-year-old man from Greater Sudbury is facing impaired driving and other charges after he was arrested Nov. 9 in Cartier.
In a news release, Sudbury Ontario Provincial Police said they were called at 4:20 p.m. about a suspected impaired driver travelling south on Highway 144, north of Halfway Lake Provincial Park.
"A short time later, the officer located the vehicle on Highway 144 and observed it swerving all over the road," police said in a news release. "Police followed the vehicle for several kilometres while attempting to stop it, just south of Halfway Lake Provincial Park, but the driver failed to stop. The pursuit was then terminated."
Police found the driver about an hour later while patrolling near Cartier, and followed it as it turned onto Old Cartier Road.
"The vehicle was subsequently located parked along Lochhead Drive in Cartier Township," police said. "The driver attempted to leave but the vehicle was in park. The officer managed to open the driver's door, reached inside and was able to shut off the engine. The driver resisted arrest but after a brief struggle, was eventually taken into custody."
The 42-year-old man is charged with impaired driving, driving with more than the legal amount of blood alcohol concentration, fleeing from police, dangerous operation of a vehicle and resisting arrest. His driver's license was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Dec. 23 in Sudbury. None of the charges have been proven in court.
The incident marks the 58th impaired driving charge in the Nipissing West detachment area in 2020.
