The humane society said it was shocked to receive a call from OPP last Friday morning about the crash and some of the contents that were able to be saved.
“Our animal control staff went to the scene and they were out there all day Friday, working with the crews and helping with the cleanup,” said Liam Cullin, executive director of the humane society.
The crash happened before 11 p.m. on June 20 near the Hwy 654 exit near Callander. A vehicle abruptly stopped after striking a deer because the hood flew up, obstructing their view.
The transport truck following behind couldn't stop, struck two vehicles, then went over an embankment and ended up hanging off a bridge. Remarkably, nobody was injured.
The transport was carrying rolls of paper towel, cat litter and both wet and dry dog and cat food, which ended up being donated to the humane society.
“It was either going to go to waste or go to somewhere in need and I’m glad we were able to help them out with the cleanup,” said Cullin.
The donation couldn’t have come at a better time for the humane society. This week, it brought in 15 new puppies from Moosonee through an animal rescue group transfer.
“I was looking at last year’s numbers before we opened. We had 86 animals brought in last May,” said Cullin.
“This May alone we had 143 animals. So the number of animals has nearly doubled.”
Cullin said the donation will help ensure the hungry mouths at the humane society will be fed for months to come.
