Here are the five worst roads in northern Ontario 2022
The results of the annual CAA Worst Roads list for 2022 are in and Greater Sudbury has three of the top five in northern Ontario.
Road conditions are a big topic of conversation among drivers, especially in the north, and every year the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) invites Ontario residents to nominate and vote for the ones in the roughest shape around the province.
These are the top five worst roads in northern Ontario this year:
- Algonquin Boulevard East in Timmins
- Lansing Avenue in Greater Sudbury
- Arthur Street West in Thunder Bay
- Paris Street in Greater Sudbury
- Fielding Road in Greater Sudbury
"We’ve increased the road users to include bicyclists and pedestrians and e-scooters and it, basically anybody who would be impacted by road infrastructure. And the reason we do this is because we want to have a conversation and a dialogue with the municipalities in the provinces in a data-driven way," Julie Beun, the director of communications at CAA, told CTV News.
"So we can actually point to the roads that show up year after year and then we can drill down into the kinds of things that are going wrong with the roads. Whether it's shoulders falling apart, alligator cracking, great big pot holes, you know … Spend $1 to address early it saves $10 later on in major road works."
Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger said the city is very aware that the roads need some extra work and investment.
"What I can say is that all three locations identified in the regional list being Lansing Avenue, Fielding Road and Paris Street locations are being reviewed for sections of large asphalt patching to be completed and at the end of 2021," Bigger said.
"We had a $6 million dollar and we immediately turned that, city council immediately turned that around to reinvest in our roads in both the hot in place recycling project as well as large spreader laid patches of asphalt."
Ken Krcel, the director of public works & environmental services for the City of Timmins, the city has been making significant investments in the roads.
"From Matagami Boulevard to Theriault Boulevard -- and that was reconstructed last year at a cost of around $7 million. So this year, we issued a three-year contract to get us from Theriault Boulevard to Burnett Drive and that’s valued in the neighbourhood of $27 million over the next three years," Krcel said.
"But luckily, back in April, the provincial government stepped up and the MTO stepped up and they committed over $74 million over the next eight years to help us rebuild our connecting link."
