Environment Canada issued a heavy rainfall warning Monday afternoon for areas in and around Sudbury and North Bay.

North Bay is also under a severe thunderstorm watch.

“Rainfall amounts up to 100 mm,” Environment Canada said.

“Rainfall rates of 30 mm an hour … continuing into this evening.”

The warning said that scattered showers and thunderstorms “continue to bring significant rain to some parts of northeastern Ontario. There are indications some areas have received over 50 mm of rain and may receive additional amounts of 30 to 50 mm.”

“These higher rainfall totals are expected to remain well north of Sudbury and North Bay. Some locations impacted include New Liskeard, Kirkland Lake and Mattawa,” the warning said.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
