Guest and Passenger numbers at the Greater Sudbury Airport sky rocket in 2017, as they hit record traffic.

The arrival of a new airline service and the fact other airlines upgraded their aircraft size appears to have helped boost the numbers of people flying in and out of Sudbury’s airport last year.

Reporting an overall passenger increase of 18%, almost 271,000 people came through the airport, compared to just over 229,000 in 2016.

Airport officials say the significant increase is due to a combination of factors.

“This substantial growth can be attributed to the air carriers meeting passenger demand through improved scheduling, a stronger focus on flight reliability, and the upsizing of aircraft for certain flights. Additionally, the introduction of WestJet to the Sudbury market has been extremely beneficial.” said Todd Tripp, the CEO of the Greater Sudbury Airport.

The airport plans to continue to make improvements to air travel options.
