Gastrointestinal outbreak declared at long-term care home in Elliot Lake, visitation limited
A gastrointestinal outbreak was declared by Algoma Public Health at St. Joseph’s Manor, in Elliot Lake, St. Joseph’s General Hospital Elliot Lake (SJGHEL) said in a news release Friday.
The outbreak was originally declared on Wednesday, health officials with SJGHEL said the outbreak is ongoing with case numbers increasing.
The long-term care home is now “strongly encouraging” all visitors to please limit their visitation to essential or compassionate reasons only.
“With the virus spreading throughout the community, your support, understanding, and solidarity during these difficult times contribute significantly to the overall strength and resilience of our community,” said Jeremy Stevenson, SJGHEL’s chief executive officer, in the news release.
“Together, we can overcome any challenges that come our way. Thank you to the healthcare professionals for maintaining operations, for their resilience and commitment to the well-being of our residents.”
If you need to visit some at the Manor, full personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required for all visitors, said SJGHEL staff in the release.
To minimize the risk, SJGHEL suggests individuals pay special attention to hand hygiene during an outbreak and if you are not feeling well, stay home and rest, or contact your primary health care provider.
