SUDBURY -- class="p1"> Sudbury fire officials say five people have been sent to hospital after a serious incident in the New Sudbury neighbourhood Thursday morning.

Fire official say it happened around 7:30 a.m. March 5 at an apartment complex on Attlee Avenue.

A father and his four young children were inside the home at the time of the incident and are now being treated at Health Sciences North.

The father suffered burn injuries and his four children are currently being observed for probable smoke inhalation.

Sudbury's Acting Deputy Fire Chief, Jesse Oshell, says the extent of the injuries is unknown at this time.

"One of the occupants did have to evacuate the residence through an upper story window. From what we understand, dad did a very brave thing and made sure that his family and his children had gotten out of the residence," said Oshell.

Oshell says the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office is on its way for a further investigation, but said he suspects that the cause is a kitchen fire.

Emergency crews are asking people to avoid the area.
