Fatal crash closes Highway 144 closed between Cartier and Gogama

Highway 144 is closed north of Sudbury after a two-vehicle collision between a commercial and passenger vehicle happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday, police say

"One person was pronounced deceased at the scene," Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release.

The road is closed between Cartier and the Watershed, south of Gogama.

More than 100 kilometres of highway is closed between Old Cartier Road in Cartier and Sultan Industrial Road/Highway 560.

Ontario Provincial Police announced the road closure on social media shortly before 1:30 p.m.

The traffic incident management enforcement team is helping in the investigation and officers are on the scene.

No word on what caused the crash.

There is currently no estimated reopening time.

"The highway will remain closed for a period of time as the investigation continues," OPP said shortly after 5 p.m.

"Motorist are advised to obtain information and detours, by calling 511 or by visiting the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) website at: https://511on.ca/."
