Extreme cold alert in Sudbury extended until Monday
Organizations in Greater Sudbury that deal with people experiencing homelessness have again extended the extreme cold alert they issued on Thursday.
“This alert will put into action a short-term emergency plan to increase community services when the temperature is predicted to be below -15 degrees Celsius, below -20 with a wind chill, or when Environment Canada issues a storm watch or weather warning,” said the Homelessness Network of Sudbury in a news release.
The alert is now in effect until noon Monday.
"People on the street will be encouraged to voluntarily access shelters and services,” the Homelessness network said.
“Individuals who may be at risk due to low temperatures in their homes are also eligible for these services."
Extended services offered
L'Association des Jeunes de la rue (community outreach program) will contact people on the street, transport them to warm spaces and will be equipped with extra clothing, blankets and hot beverages for those who choose not to access shelters. They can be contacted via their hotline at 705-688-6975 from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Project Go Give can also be reached for support or transportation from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. The Go Give van can be reached at 705-822-7596.
Warming centres
The Samaritan Centre Station at 344 Elgin St. will be open every night from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. and 'The Warming Station' at 24 Energy Crt. will be open every night from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Shelters
Emergency shelter for homeless families is available 24 hours through The Salvation Army Cedar Place for women and children at 261 Cedar St.
The Canadian Mental Health Association`s Off the Street Emergency Shelter at 200 Larch Street is available nightly to anyone 16 years or older from 9 p.m. until 11 a.m.
The Safe Harbour House at 288 Kingsmount Blvd. is a low-barrier shelter for women and gender-diverse people operated by the Elizabeth Fry Society which is open from 9 p.m. until 8 a.m.
