While the news lately in the Sudbury mining sector has been about closure of operations like Stobie Mine and part of the Clarabelle Mill, there is news of some expansion that will be occurring over the next several years.
Vale's Copper Cliff mine will see a $760-million investment spread out over the next four years.
Back in 2008, part of the Copper Cliff complex was put on “care and maintenance” because of economic conditions.
The company says part of this project is about rehabilitating that shaft and infrastructure.
Angie Robson is the Manager of Corporate and Aboriginal Affairs at Vale.
“In the construction phase of the project, at peak construction, we will see about 450 construction jobs and in terms of operational jobs. Once we begin production, it's about 300 jobs, but those jobs will really be replacement jobs. As our older ore bodies start to be depleted, then we will re-deploy people. So, not necessarily net new jobs, but continued jobs at our operations." said Robson.
As well, another mining giant, Glencore, will also expand one of its existing mines in a project worth $900-million Canadian. It'll be known as Onaping depth.
