Many residents in Espanola call it the 'heart of the community.'

This weekend, the A.B. Ellis Public School building will be 100-years-old and former students and staff will gather to celebrate the milestone.

Festivities begin Friday, August 2 at 4:30 pm with a car show and culminate on Sunday, August 4 with a brunch at the local Royal Canadian Legion.

Over the past century, 30,000 students have passed through its doors.

Organizers of the party say it’s a time to celebrate accomplishments and renew friendships made at the school.

The celebration has special significance. There is a separate community effort underway to save the school, which has been voted as surplus by the Rainbow District School Board.

Right now, the building is being rented to another school board until 2020.

One group would like to eventually see the building turned into housing for seniors or a community centre.
