Members of the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service are busy promoting Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week.
It's a campaign that focuses on how to prevent CO poisoning in your home.
Detectors are available to let people know when the silent killer is in their house.
"Well, it's colourless, odourless and tasteless, so unless you have a carbon monoxide alarm working in your home, you will not know you have it." said Aaron Gravelle, a public education officer for the city.
Five years ago, the province made it mandatory for certain households to have a carbon monoxide alarm.
"If you have a fuel burning appliance, an attached garage or a fire place, it is mandatory to have a carbon monoxide alarm outside of all sleeping areas in your home." said Gravelle.
In the past two years, the Sault Ste. Marie fire department has averaged between 300-350 calls for carbon monoxide alarms, and 90% have been false alarms.
Gravelle says you can get dual fire and CO alarms to protect you house.
"That's right, they have a combination smoke and CO alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, and those have to be located on the ceiling or high up on the wall because of smoke sensor, so it can detect the smoke that rises." said Gravelle.
He also says if you have any questions about co alarms you can contact any fire hall at 705-949-3335.
