TIMMINS -- Organizers of the Coldest Night of the Year event in Timmins received some good news this week. Northern College announced on Wednesday, it would donate five-thousand dollars to the cause.

This is the third year for a Coldest Night of the Year walkathon in Timmins, and for the first time, a title sponsor has come on board.

“I really didn’t honestly believe the news at first," said Jennifer Vachon, executive director of Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins. ”It’s a huge boost to the event. It’s really going to help us get toward our goal of $40,000 this year.”

The Coldest Night of the Year is a family-friendly walkathon happening on Feb. 22, 2020. Funds raised through the event will be donated to Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins.

Northern College has had a long-standing partnership with the organization which runs three programs aimed at making good food more accessible. Those include:

-Good Food Box

-Collective Cooking

-Community Gardens

“It’s a moment for us,” said Susan Hunter with Northern College. “By supporting this wonderful event, we are showing our community that we’re committed to being change makers.”

Participants will have the option to walk a two, five or 10 kilometre walk with breaks along the way at various organizations that provide services to people who are homeless—the Timmins Native Friendship Centre is one of them.
