The smell of pot from a vehicle during a RIDE check in Espanola led police to find $41,200 in cannabis, along with 140 gummies and 50 vape pens.

Two people have been charged with trafficking and other offences following the incident early Tuesday morning, Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release.

The vehicle was stopped at 12:45 a.m. on Highway 6.

"A vehicle approached officers and police noticed an odour of cannabis coming from the vehicle," the release said.

A search uncovered 12 kilograms of dried cannabis, 140 packages of cannabis gummies worth $5,800 and the vape pens worth $2,000. Ten grams of suspected cocaine worth $1,000 was also found.

The driver, a 58-year-old from Annan, near Owen Sound, was charged with several drug-related offences, as was the passenger, a 33-year-old from Markham.

Both accused were held in custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sudbury sometime on Tuesday.
