TIMMINS -- The South Porcupine Winter Carnival celebrated its 45th year, carrying on the tradition and adding new attractions for the neighbourhood to enjoy.

This year’s new additions included a horse-drawn wagon ride, an "Outdoor Champion" competition and an arts and crafts area.

The East End Community Pride Association organizes the yearly event, and Joanne Hagger-Perritt, it’s children’s activities director, said it’s a staple for the area.

"The crowds get bigger every year," said Hagger-Perritt. "The community is just absolutely fabulous, in terms of coming out and supporting the activities that happen."

The event kicked off Friday evening with a magic show and continued throughout the weekend with family activities like log-sawing, toffee-making and a scavenger hunt spanning four event stations across the neighbourhood.

The event ends with a closing ceremony and prizes awarded to the winners of the 'Penny Table' and the 'Outdoor Champion' competitions.

With a new decade of carnivals to look forward to, the annual affair has "endless potential," said Hagger-Perritt.

"If we can recruit new volunteers with new ideas and create new events for children and families every year, then the carnival just keeps getting better and better."
