The driver of an ATV fled the area when police tried to stop them in the early morning hours of July 11 in Elliot Lake, Ont., provincial police say.

Shortly before 2 a.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol when they observed ATV with no lights lit traveling on Pearson Drive.

“The driver who is known to police fled the area,” said OPP.

Approximately 30 minutes later, officers conducted a traffic stop on a pickup truck on Kilborn Avenue.

“A rear passenger of the pick-up truck gave police a false name and was subsequently arrested,” said police.

“The second rear passenger was the ATV driver that had fled on police earlier.”

As a result of the incidents, the ATV driver, a 56-year-old local woman, has been charged with failing to stop for police, flight from a peace officer, failing to drive on the shoulder and lamps not lit. The other rear passenger from the pickup, a 41-year-old man from Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation was charged with obstructing a peace officer and three counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.

Both accused were released and are scheduled to appear in court at later dates.

None of the accusations has been proven in court.
