CTV News has learned that a female student was assaulted and injured in a Laurentian University dorm room on Saturday sometime after 2 am.

Police were called around 3:30 am and say that a woman was left with serious facial injuries after an assault by a young man, who left the residence immediately after.

The young woman was transported to hospital and treated for her injuries.

As a result of the investigation, a 22-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie was arrested and charged with assault.

“Exactly how they became involved with each other is under investigation. They did end up in the individual’s unit. They were not known to each other, but they did have friends in common.” said Kaitlyn  Dunn of Greater Sudbury Police Service.

The university says it has launched an investigation in addition to the one being done by the police.  It also says the school is providing support for the campus community and believes this is an isolated incident.
