One man has been charged after a nearly four-hour armed standoff in Attawapiskat First Nation ended without incident Sunday afternoon.

In a news release Monday, Nishnawbe Aski Police Service said it received reports of an armed male barricaded inside a home on Spruce Street.

"Police arrived on scene and contained an area surrounding the home to ensure public safety," the release said.

"Police learned the male was armed with a firearm. Members of the NAPS Emergency Response Team were dispatched."

After hours of negotiation, the male left the home, was cleared medically and taken into police custody.

The 43-year-old resident of Attawapiskat First Nation is charged with three weapons-related offences and one count of uttering threats.

He appeared in bail court on Monday and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
