SUDBURY -- Algoma Public Health reported a new COVID-19 case Monday, the 35th in the area since the beginning of the pandemic.
The source of infection was international travel, the health unit said, adding the case "is evidence of community spread in northern Michigan."
The person was tested Monday and was self-isolating, Algoma Public Health said. However, the Sault Area Hospital confirmed the person had gotten ill and has been admitted to hospital.
"The patient’s condition has required admission to the hospital," the hospital said in a news release. "Appropriate isolation precautions have been implemented."
"Our front-line teams acted quickly and efficiently to ensure the patient received an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care. We are fortunate that our teams have been preparing for this type of situation for many months."
The hospital remains open. Clinics and procedures will continue to operate under the current practice.
"The hospital is safe for patients and visitors," the release said.
The health unit said it was important for anyone feeling ill to self-isolate.
"Anyone who is ill, even with mild symptoms, must stay home and self-isolate away from others," the health unit said in a news release. "Do not have close contact with others outside the immediate household of people you live with. This is part of new provincial public health measures announced on Oct. 2."
