There are reports of an active shooter at a commercial building in a suburb of Madison, Wisconsin, called Middleton.

The local sheriff's department says the office is assisting Middleton police with the response to shots fired at Esker Software.

Middleton is about 145 kilometres west of Milwaukee.

Update:

An administrator for the City of Middleton, Mike Davis, says that four people were shot and wounded during an incident Wednesday.

Davis says the suspected shooter was critically injured during the late-morning shooting at WTS Paradigm, a company that makes software for the building products industry.

A business analyst at WTS Paradigm, Judy Lahmers, where the shooting occurred, said she was working at her desk when she heard shots at about 10 am. She said it sounded “like somebody was dropping boards on the ground, really loud.” Lahmers said she ran out of the buildingand hid behind a car. She said the building’s glass entrance door shattered.

“I’m not looking back, I’m running as fast as I can. You just wonder, ‘Do you hide or do you run?’ said Lahmers.

She says one co-worker had been grazed by a bullet during the shooting, but was okay.

“Totally unexpected. We’re all software people. We have a good group.” said Lahmers.

An employee at Esker Software, Gabe Geib, says he heard a couple of shots coming from next door that “sounded like claps” while he was working at his desk, before seeing people running quickly away from the building.

Police locked down a nearby shopping centre during the incident.
