Sault Police officers were called to the scene where human remains were reportedly found on Thursday afternoon.

It turns out, what officers discovered was a bloody prosthetic hand.

The Sault Police Service said officers found 'a realistic prosthetic hand with blood on it' submerged in the water near Whitefish Island.

"When our officers arrived, they were able to see what is an incredible life-like human hand with blood on it," said Constable Sonny Spina.

"Officers weren't initially able to get down to the scene, however when our officers arrived with their equipment, they were actually able to get down to it and when the item was taken out of the water, they found it was actually a prosthetic or fake hand."

Access to Whitefish Island was restricted while officers searched the area. It is now open to the public.
