SUDBURY -- Two would-be thieves tried to steal an automatic teller machine in Field last week, but all they got was their images captured on security footage.

The video from Oct. 2 shows two people entering the area where the ATM was located at the Caisse Alliance located on Grande Allée in Field.

"Investigation revealed between 4:48 a.m. and 4:56 a.m., two unknown males wearing masks, black clothing, gloves, balaclavas, headlamp, orange glasses, tan coloured work boots and carrying tools, are observed shooting the camera lens with a paintball gun, which failed," Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Wednesday.

After failing to cover the camera with the paintball gun, the crooks tried to blur the camera by smearing paint over it.

"Culprits then tried to break into the ATM using their tools, but were unsuccessful and left the scene on foot, heading in an eastbound direction," police said.

Officers are seeking the public's assistance to identify the suspects in the attached photos.

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of members from the OPP Forensic Identification Services.
