An employee operating a piece of equipment in an open pit was killed Wednesday at New Gold's gold mine in Rainy River in northern Ontario.

"New Gold Inc. deeply regrets that early this morning … an employee operating a piece of equipment in the open pit was fatally injured," the company said in a news release.

"The health, safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority. The company is working closely with local authorities and an investigation is underway."

The company said its operations have been "voluntarily suspended" in light of the tragedy.

"The thoughts of management are with the family, friends and colleagues who have been impacted by this tragic incident," the release said.

"The company will provide additional information as appropriate."

New Gold operates the Rainy River gold mine and the New Afton, B.C., copper-gold mine.

A message to Ontario's Ministry of Labour seeking further information on the fatality was not immediately returned Thursday.
