SUDBURY -- The Porcupine Health Unit is investigating a positive COVID-19 result for an employee from Detour Lake Mine in Cochrane, the health unit said Friday.

"The individual is currently being monitored by the PHU and is in self-isolation at home while the investigation continues," a news release said.

"The PHU has already followed up with close contacts (those with high risk exposures), however, there is a potential for exposure for anyone on site between July 30 and Aug. 3."

Anyone who may have been exposed is being advised to monitor themselves for symptoms and isolate immediately if they occur. Report to your supervisor or medical staff and call the health unit to be tested.

"Regardless of exposure, the PHU advises all employees to monitor for symptoms and to stay home if not feeling well," the release said.

"The PHU is working closely with the workplace to ensure the infection prevention and control measures are in place. The management team at Kirkland Lake Gold is taking all the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent the transmission of COVID-19."

Anyone who is not feeling well, should stay home, self-isolate and seek testing through one of the assessment centres across Ontario.

Anyone concerned can also call the Porcupine Health Unit at 705-267-1181 or toll-free at 1-800-461-1818. The COVID-19 Information Line is open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

While these recommendations apply for 14 days, ending on Aug. 17, people are always advised to monitor and stay home if unwell in any way, regardless of exposure.

Symptoms can include: fever, new or worsening cough, shortness of breath, sore throat/hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, loss of sense of smell or taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or runny nose or nasal congestion.

But in some cases, atypical symptoms could develop, such as, unexplained fatigue or malaise, muscle aches, delirium, unexplained or increased number of falls, acute functional decline, exacerbation of current chronic conditions, chills, headaches, croup, conjunctivitis.
