SUDBURY -- A 29-year-old man has been charged with careless use of a firearm following an incident Tuesday evening at a residence on Shirley Street in Chelmsford.

Police received a call regarding a weapons complaint around 10:30 p.m.

"A man was believed to be in possession of a gun and ammunition, and could be heard unzipping a gun case and racking the gun several times, causing a woman in the residence to fear for her safety," police said in a news release Wednesday. "The woman, who is known to the man, fled the residence and contacted police."

Officers arrived, secured the area and tried to convince the man to cooperate.

"Officers made countless efforts to communicate with the man, who remained inside the residence," police said.

"Due to the man’s unwillingness to cooperate with patrol officers, tactical officers attended the scene. After numerous attempts to make contact with the man, the man was eventually taken into custody."

No one was injured during the incident.

Police seized three non-restricted long guns and a small quantity of ammunition from the residence.

He was charged with careless use of firearm and released with a promise to appear in court Dec. 23.
