An elderly woman in Sudbury has been in hospital for last two weeks after someone broke into her home while she was there.

The home invasion occurred in the Cambrian Heights area of the city and sent the woman into medical distress.

People who live in the Cambrian Heights area aren't shy about calling it one of Sudbury's roughest neighbourhoods, and it was for one elderly woman living in the Prism Co-operative when a masked intruder entered her home on November 1st.

“We were initially contacted by fire services after they, as well as paramedics, responded to an unconscious woman." said Kaitlyn Dunn, of Greater Sudbury Police Service.

The woman was found that way by a family member after the assailant fled with the woman's jewellery, purse, and prescription drugs.

Almost two weeks later, the woman is still in hospital.

She wasn’t injured by the assailant, but police say an underlying medical condition was triggered by the ordeal, suggesting the she was scared almost to death.

That explains why police are only now making the incident public.

"There was a lapse in the amount of time before they were able to speak to her. And once being able to interview her and gather additional information, we put it out." said Dunn.

But the victim couldn't tell police much.

It was late, the intruder was disguised, and even though the suspect threatened her, she couldn't be certain if it was a man or a woman.

And despite the neighbourhood's rough reputation, police say they haven't received any similar reports and believe this to be an isolated incident.

However, police are asking anyone with information to come forward as the suspect is still at large.
