Winter weather advisory issued for much of the northeast
Environment Canada has issued a winter weather advisory Thursday morning for much of northeastern Ontario.
Affected communities include Greater Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Elliot Lake, Manitoulin Island and Hearst.
Rain earlier in the day will turn to snow, Environment Canada said, with amounts ranging from 5 cm to 20 cm expected to fall before evening.
"Temperatures will dip considerably below freezing later today which may lead to icy road conditions," the weather forecaster said in a news release.
"As a result, travel will become hazardous."
Drivers should prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.
"Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions," the release said.
"Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Slow down driving in slippery conditions. Watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery."
