SUDBURY -- School buses in the Nipissing, Parry Sound and Timiskaming Districts have been cancelled Tuesday as northeastern Ont. braces due to a winter storm with heavy wind gusts of up to 70 km/h, up to 30 cm of snow.

The strengthening low-pressure weather system is moving up from southern Ontario and caused school bus cancellations in the Muskoka and Simcoe areas.

In northeastern Ontario, Nipissing – Parry Sound Student Transportation Services cancelled school buses as well from Parry Sound up to North Bay and Sturgeon Falls, check your corridor here. The North East Tri-Board Student Transportation service also cancelled buses from Kirkland Lake to Temagami due to the weather, check your route here.

Three schools in the Timiskaming District have been closed Tuesday due to weather:

  • Temagami Public School
  • Kerns Public School
  • Elk Lake Public School

Environment Canada has expanded its special weather statement in northeastern Ontario as a major winter storm approaches Tuesday morning, upgrading to snowfall warnings in some areas.

Snowfall warnings, with an accumulation of 20 to 30 cm of snow, are in effect for:

  • Englehart
  • French River
  • Kirkland Lake
  • Mattawa
  • North Bay
  • Powassan
  • Temagami
  • Temiskaming Shores
  • West Nipissing

Snow and heavy wind gusts up to 70 km/h creating blowing snow and visibility issues will start Tuesday morning and continue into Wednesday afternoon.

Special weather statements were issued Tuesday morning for:

  • Espanola
  • Greater Sudbury and vicinity
  • Killarney

These three areas are expected to receive 10 to 15 cm of snow with wind gusts of up to 70 km/h.
