More than three dozen charges have been laid against a northern Ontario man accused of fraudulently depositing cheques twice.

An investigation began in November 2023 "after a business reported several instances of cheques being deposited twice," Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Monday.

"Through a production order and further investigation, officers determined that 18 cheques had been fraudulently processed a second time, resulting in an estimated loss of approximately $12,000," OPP said.

The male suspect was charged Oct. 2 with 18 counts each of fraud under $5,000 and obtaining credit by false pretences or fraud as well as one count of fraud over $5,000.

He was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court in North Bay on Nov. 7.

"Intentionally depositing a cheque more than once is considered fraud under the Canadian Criminal Code," OPP said.

"Fraud is a serious criminal offence, punishable by imprisonment."
