SUDBURY -- A 51-year old man from Wahnapitae is facing a host of charges after he was pulled over Oct. 20 by Manitoulin Island Ontario Provincial Police.

Police stopped him at 10:30 p.m. on Highway 17 in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township, in part, because he didn't switch his headlights to low beams when facing oncoming traffic, which is a provincial offence.

"Police determined that the driver had consumed alcohol, and continued their roadside investigation," the OPP said in a news release Friday. "The driver was arrested and brought to Espanola detachment for further testing. Police also located and seized suspected methamphetamine and cannabis with an estimated street value of $340."

He is charged with impaired driving, meth possession, driving with cannabis readily available, failing to use low beans when faced with oncoming traffic, no insurance in the vehicle, not wearing a seatbelt properly, not having a vehicle permit and driving while suspended.

The man was released on several provincial summonses and also an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Dec. 14 in Espanola.

He was also issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

"This charge marks the 50th driver charged under the Criminal Impaired Driving Laws in the Manitoulin OPP Detachment area in 2020," police said.
