In Sault Ste. Marie, there are more than 70 businesses and not-for-profits that rely on volunteers.

Two dozen of those businesses took part in the Chamber of Commerce's first ever volunteer expo on September 14.

Participants say at times it can be difficult to attract new people willing to give up their time to help out.

"Because were not overly well known in the community, it's again events like this in the community. It helps to promote our organization and to provide that service to people," said Stacey Manning, Brain Injury Association.

"It's really essential to feel that community support and kind of get out there and let them know we exist. Especially since because we are removed from the core, it's very, very important to see this," said Joshua Richards, Sault Community Theatre Centre.

The Sault Community Theatre Centre was hoping to attract new young volunteers.

Richards says most of the current volunteers are staying on because there's no one stepping up to take over.

"Yeah there definitely is that kind of sense that they come back because they feel the pride and they want to see it keep going," said Richards.

Those manning the booth say there's plenty of different way you can volunteer and that each are rewarding.

"It's a great feeling to know that you can help your community," said Saija Paakki, Crime Stoppers.

Organizers say newcomers tend to volunteer the most as they are trying to integrate themselves into the community.
