Video shows northern Ontario hunter freeing bull moose stuck in cables
A northern Ontario man was in the bush hunting for partridge with his fiancé when he came across a big bull moose entangled in some hydro lines in his antlers.
Bull moose with hydro cables stuck in antler rack. Sept. 23, 2024 (Gilles Dequanne)
Gilles Dequanne is from the Greater Sudbury community of Chelmsford but now lives in Dubreuilville.
A video from earlier this week shows the moose rearing up on its hind legs trying unsuccessfully to get loose as Dequanne walks closer to the animal near the hydro pole.
Several cables could be seen hanging down from the pole.
"There was a total of three cables wrapped around his rack," Dequanne told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an interview over social media.
He can be seen in the video wearing his bright hunter's orange.
"I'm gonna try to cut the cable by shooting at the cable with my shotgun," he said in the video.
After shooting one of the cables, a second video clip shows the moose was able to move farther from the hydro pole, but another cable still had him stuck.
"There he is there," Dequanne said.
"I shot the bigger cable but there is still a little cable left, I'm going to shoot that little cable now."
He was able to free the animal which retreated immediately to the nearby woods.
"There is still all those cables wrapped around his rack plus he has two pieces of wire still that he is dragging," Dequanne said.
"One cable is about 100 feet long and other cable is around 50 feet long. I sure hope those cables doesn't get caught around something."

The concerned hunter said he contacted the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources tipline to tell them about the situation.
"Sure hope they go looking for him with their helicopter, tranquillize him and get those cables off his rack," Dequanne said.
"We do have a lot of wolves in the area, so it leaves him quite vulnerable to being killed by wolves."
