Victim receives serious burn injuries in Wiikwemkoong

An investigation is underway in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island after emergency crews responded to reports of a victim with serious burn injuries.

The incident was reported at 7 p.m. Aug. 26, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Tuesday morning. The victim was taken to hospital by Ornge to receive treatment, police said.

The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service, Manitoulin OPP, fire EMS responded to the call.

"The Manitoulin OPP crime unit and (tribal police) are continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch," the OPP said.

"Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and there are no concerns for public safety. Further updates will be provided when they become available."

Police have not said exactly how the victim was injured or whether they are searching for any suspects in the case.
