SUDBURY -- A police spot check in Kapuskasing late last month led to an alarming case in which the driver nearly hit police trying to flee – with four children under age 12 in the vehicle as it drove away.

The incident took place June 27 at 2 a.m. at the intersection of Highways 11 and 581, east of Kapuskasing.

Police pulled over a vehicle with two adults and four children inside, when police learned the driver was breaching release conditions.

"Shortly thereafter, the driver fled from police, almost hitting the officers," police said in a news release Monday.

The empty vehicle was found abandoned west of the spot check where it had crashed. The two adults were later located in a camper trailer and were arrested.

"The two adults and three of the children were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and were released," police said.

The driver, a 31-year-old from Arran-Elderslie, Ont., is facing several charges, including breaching release conditions, obstructing a peace officer, flight from police, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, possession of a dangerous weapon, failing to remain at the scene, driving without a permit, and three counts of driving while children not properly secured in the vehicle.

The other adult, a 25-year-old from Tara, Ont. is charged with two counts of possessing dangerous weapons, breaching release conditions, making a false statement, impersonating someone else to avoid arrest, obstructing a peace officer and unlawfully being in a dwelling.

Both adults have been released from custody following a bail hearing and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Kapuskasing on Sept. 28, to answer to the charges.
