‘Thousands of dollars in losses’ from phone line thefts in Port Moody, police say

Police in Port Moody say they’re investigating a string of copper wire thefts in the city, after a new incident was reported earlier this week.

Around 4 a.m. on Monday, front-line officers were called to the area of Ioco Road near First Avenue for “a report of cable theft from a telephone pole,” the Port Moody Police Department said in a news release Thursday.

“Two persons of interest have been identified and the matter remains under investigation,” the release reads, before adding that the PMPD has been responding to similar reports in the old Ioco area “over the past year.”

Among those reports was a string of incidents that occurred last spring, with telephone wires cut at Bedwell Bay near Thermal Plant Road on April 25 and 29, in the 2900 block of Bedwell Bay Road on May 9 and on First Avenue near Ioco Road on May 21.

“These incidents have totalled thousands of dollars in losses and have impacted phone services to the surrounding areas at times,” said, Const. Sam Zacharias, in the release.

“We ask that anyone with information contact us and we are also requesting the public remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to us immediately.”
