Man charged with impaired driving in Delta crash that left 1 passenger paralyzed

A man who allegedly crashed a car while impaired and fled the scene in Delta – leaving two seriously injured people in the back seat – has been charged after a lengthy investigation, according to authorities.

The offences occurred on Oct. 25, 2023, when the driver of an Acura RSX went off the road and crashed into trees in Watershed Park, the Delta Police Department said in a news release Wednesday.

“Two rear seat passengers were trapped in the car and required extrication by the Delta Fire Department. The driver and front passenger allegedly fled from the scene prior to emergency responders attending,” police said.

One of the passengers is quadriplegic as a result of the crash, and another suffered fractures to their pelvis and vertebrae, according to the DPD, who describe the crash as having “changed lives permanently.”

Jushan Virk, 29, has been charged with two counts of failing to remain at the scene of a collision causing bodily harm, two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, and two counts of driving with a blood alcohol level over .08.

Virk has been released from custody pending his next court appearance, which online records show is scheduled for March.
