People use air travel to transport their pets for many reasons, but a major U.S. based airline is putting dog-shipping on hold while it investigates a series of mishaps.

United Airlines announced Tuesday that it will not accept any new reservations for pets in the cargo compartment while it reviews the program.

This decision comes after a dog was shipped to Japan instead of Kansas.

Another recent flight made an unscheduled landing in Ohio after the airline learned a dog was on the wrong plane.

United's “PetSsafe” program only includes pets shipped as cargo. It does not affect dogs that are brought in the cabin, like the French bulldog puppy that died after a flight attendant ordered a passenger to put it in the overhead compartment.

The program pause does not affect existing reservations.
