SUDBURY -- Two people in the Sault Ste. Marie area have tested positive for COVID-19, Algoma Public Health said Tuesday.

Cases No. 36 and 37 were as a result of having close contact with someone with the disease, the health unit said.

"Exposure is evidence of community spread in southern Ontario," Public Health said in a news release. "Close contacts have been notified."

Both people were tested Oct. 5, and marks the third positive test in two days after a case was reported Monday. In that case, the source was travel to the U.S.

"Anyone who is ill, even with mild symptoms, must stay home and self-isolate away from others," the health unit said. "Do not have close contact with others outside the immediate household of people you live with."

Algoma Public Health advises people adhere to the following principles to stay safe:

- Practice physical distancing.

- Limit/know and track your close contacts.

- If you feel sick, stay home.

- Wash hands frequently and thoroughly.

- Wear a mask in enclosed public space.
