Original:

An early morning crash in Timmins has closed a major thoroughfare in the city affecting the morning commute.

Around 6:30 am Wednesday morning, a commercial truck carrying a wide-load struck a hydro pole, which snapped in half, just west of the intersection of Algonquin and Theriault Boulevards.

Hydro crews on the scene say the truck was not following the proper trucking routes.

In order to fix the pole and line, the power will have to be shut off for a period of time.

Timmins Police closed Algonquin Boulevard from Theriault Boulevard to Charles Street due to safety reasons and is expected to remain closed all day.

Detours have been set up:

  • East bound traffic can take Mattagami Drive and continue east on Wilson or Commercial Avenue.
  • Westbound traffic will take Theriault Boulevard to Airport Road and access the west end of the city via Lafleur Drive.

NOTE: Norman Street is NOT a viable detour route for heavy traffic.

The collision remains under investigation at this time.

No confirmation on injuries.
