SUDBURY -- Ontario Provincial Police have charged two people with manslaughter in connection to a suspected overdose death in Cochrane last summer.

On June 11, 2020, emergency responders found a 34-year-old unresponsive at a home on Sixth Avenue who was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

As a result of an ongoing investigation, a 26-year-old from Cochrane and a 46-year-old from Taykwa Tagamou Nation, formerly known as New Post First Nation, are facing drug trafficking charges in addition to manslaughter.

"The OPP continues to investigate opioid-related incidences with an acute focus on the apprehension of those who produce, import and traffic illegal drugs," police said in a news release Thursday morning. "The OPP continues to work with community partners to strategically and collaboratively address the opioid-related issues at the local and provincial levels."

The two accused are scheduled to appear in court on June 8 in Cochrane.

None of the allegations has been proven or tested in court.
