Two charged with assault following downtown Sudbury altercation

Two people from Greater Sudbury have been charged with assault, weapons and several other offences following an incident Tuesday morning in downtown Sudbury.

Police responded around 8 a.m. to an assault in progress at Elm Street at Eyre Street.

"Information provided was that multiple people were involved in an altercation in the street where one person was seen with a knife and another person was seen with what was believed to be a gun," police said in a news release Tuesday afternoon.

"Officers arrived on scene and immediately took two people believed to be involved in the altercation into custody. Additional information provided was that the individual believed to be in possession of the gun had entered a residential building on Elm Street at Eyre Street."

The building was contained and Elm Street was closed at multiple intersections to ensure public and officer safety.

"Officers assisted individuals not involved in the incident to evacuate the building," police said.

Eventually, two people left the building and were taken into custody. The emergency response unit and K9 unit arrived, entered the unit and took a fifth person into custody.

Three people released from custody

"As a result of the ongoing investigation, three people have been released unconditionally and two people have been charged," police said.

A 42-year-old man has been charged with weapons offences, including pointing a firearm, and six counts of breaching probation orders.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with weapons possession, assault with a weapon and violating probation.

Both individuals will be held in police custody overnight and will be in bail court Wednesday.

"This is a targeted incident as the individuals involved are known to each other," police said.

"Officers are present at the residential building as detectives from the major crime section of our criminal investigation division are applying for a search warrant."
