SUDBURY -- Two people, both 18, have been charged with sexual assault following a June 23 incident in Central Manitoulin Township.

One of the accused is also charged with extortion and forcible confinement.

The Ontario Provincial Police responded to the report in the early morning hours at a residence.

Search warrants were executed, police said in a news release, with the assistance of the Manitoulin OPP crime unit and the Sault Ste. Marie forensic identification services unit and the Sudbury OPP, leading to the arrest of two persons.

The first 18-year-old is a resident of Carnarvon Township and is charged with sexual assault, extortion and forcible confinement.

"The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in September, in the Town of Gore Bay," police said.

The second 18 year old is resident of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands who is charged with sexual assault. That person was also release and is scheduled to return to court in September in Gore Bay.

The OPP, which no longer releases the gender of people they arrest, said it will not be releasing the name of either accused in order to protect the identity of the victim.
