St. Marys River in the Sault Ste. Marie area reopened to traffic following a 'marine casualty' Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard says.

An empty bulk cargo ship, The American Mariner, struck a concrete navigation aid near Munuscong Lake Junction around 12:20 a.m. March 28, vessel traffic service director Justin Bravatto told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca Thursday in a phone interview.

The ship was headed for Silver Bay, Minn., but sustained some damage and is now on its way to Ashtabula, Ohio, for repairs, coast guard spokesperson Lt. Joseph Snyder told CTV News in an email Monday.

River traffic was closed for two days while crews assessed the situation and reopened Friday evening.

Snyder said there was no pollution of the water and no one was injured as a result of the incident.

The ship left its anchorage in Munuscong Lake – also known locally as Mud Lake – on Sunday morning.

The lake sits between St. Joseph Island, Ont., and Michigan.
